What's coming up?

Literature

We have concluded the novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Next week, we will have a reflection writing assignment and study Patrick Henry’s “Give me Life or Give me Liberty” speech given to the Second Constitutional Congress.  After Spring Break, we will begin our next novel, Shane.  Please make sure your student comes prepared with their own copy.

Math
Last week, we continued to learn how to graph data. We learned how to draw histograms, stem-and-leaf plots, and interval frequency tables. We learned how to find mean, MAD, median, and IQR.

Next week, we will learn how to draw a box plot. We will also learn how to read and interpret graphs to answer questions. Then, we will have a day of review to make sure students have locked in all the concepts.

History

Last week in History the scholars learned about the class divisions that existed in Colonial Latin America and examined the causes and effects of the Haitian Revolution.

Next week we will explore the causes of the independence movement in Mexico and the impact of important leaders like Miguel Hidalgo.

Science

This week in Science, we have concluded the large unit on Arthropods.  Scholars enjoyed working in groups to create a poster with the insects they found during their project.  As a reminder, Science test corrections are due on Tuesday, March 2nd.

What's coming up?

Literature

Scholars have enjoyed growing with Tom as we have completed Chapters 21-28 this week.  In the Adventures of Tom Sawyer, we have seen Tom mature as he regrets the prank on Aunt Polly, taking the blame for Becky Thatcher, and showed great courage as he did what was right to save Muff Potter from an unjust charge.

Next week, we will conclude our novel.  Please make sure your scholar is reading and annotating nightly.  Our next novel will be Shane.

Math

In mathematics, we learned how to sketch nets of polyhedrons. We also learned how to find their surface areas. Students took a test on Thursday on Surface areas and Volumes, and on Friday we started a little bit of statistics (dot plots).

We will learn how to draw Histograms, Stem-and-leaf, and frequency tables next week. Students will learn to interpret data using those diagrams. They will also learn about mean, median, Quartile, and Inter-quartile range.

History

This week we wrapped up the French Revolution with an Exam. I definitely saw an increase in scores for this unit. We also refreshed our memories about the Five Themes of Geography, and located political and physical features of Latin America.

Next week we will begin our journey into Latin America’s fight for independence. The scholars will be introduced to the great freedom fighters of the Haitian and Mexican Revolutions.

Science

We have had an exciting week in Science.  Scholars have enjoyed learning why arachnids and insects are in different classes even though we refer to them both as “bugs”. The excitement is rising amongst 6A and 6B as our number of collected insects rises in each class.  As a reminder, scholars are expected to bring their 10 insects and their journal entries next Friday, 2/19.  The insects can be placed in Ziploc bags or any other container that is easy to transport.  Our exhilarating unit on Arthropods will conclude with a test on Thursday, 2/18.  Scholars have been completing flash cards of key terms to use as their study guide.  Please remind them that a little review each night will be beneficial when recalling information for their test.

What's coming up?

Literature

The 6th grade has enjoyed laughing at the satire found throughout the Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  We are just about half way through this exciting novel.  Please ensure your scholar is reading nightly and answering the question to prepare for our class discussions.  We will discuss Chapters 17, 18, and 19 on Monday, February 8th.  They will also be taking a quiz over the reading so far and their vocabulary list on Monday, February 8th.

Next week, scholars will read Chapters 20-28.

Math

We started Areas and Volumes this week. We learned how to find the areas of parallelograms, triangles, trapezoids, and rectangles. We also learned to classify and name polyhedrons. Then, we learned how to find the volume and surface areas of prisms.

Next week, we will learn to make net sketches of polyhedrons. Then after a day of review, students will take the unit test. We will start statistics after that. On Friday, they will learn to draw dot plots.

History

This week in History we explored what it was like during the Reign of Terror. We also discussed Napoleon’s role and impact on France.

Next week we will explore Romanticism and end The French Revolution with a Test on Wednesday. Students can begin working on the study guide they received  today. We will review together next Tuesday before the exam on Wednesday. Scholars will finish off next week with exploring the geography of Latin America.

Science

What an exciting week in Science!  We explored the Phylum Arthropod and discovered they are the largest phylum in the Animal Kingdom.  Make sure to ask your child why they are everywhere!  We ended our week with a great observation of crayfish.

Next week, we will spend time on the different organisms in the insect class.  Students did receive their Insect Project assignment today.  Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions.  Our next Science Test will be on Thursday, February 18th
