Scholars of the month

Every month, Great Hearts Western Hills chooses a virtue to focus on. The virtue of the month for February was Citizenship. One scholar in each class is highlighted for showing that virtue. For February, the scholars who we would like to highlight are Neva Shakya from 6A and Makenzie Albers from 6B.

Important Information

  • Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
  • Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
  • Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of  Shane (ISBN- 978-0-544-23947-0) B&M scholars bring their books on Monday March 15th.
  • Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
  • Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
  • Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy.

What's coming up?

Literature

We have concluded the novel, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Next week, we will have a reflection writing assignment and study Patrick Henry’s “Give me Life or Give me Liberty” speech given to the Second Constitutional Congress.  After Spring Break, we will begin our next novel, Shane.  Please make sure your student comes prepared with their own copy.

Math
Last week, we continued to learn how to graph data. We learned how to draw histograms, stem-and-leaf plots, and interval frequency tables. We learned how to find mean, MAD, median, and IQR.

Next week, we will learn how to draw a box plot. We will also learn how to read and interpret graphs to answer questions. Then, we will have a day of review to make sure students have locked in all the concepts.

History

Last week in History the scholars learned about the class divisions that existed in Colonial Latin America and examined the causes and effects of the Haitian Revolution.

Next week we will explore the causes of the independence movement in Mexico and the impact of important leaders like Miguel Hidalgo.

Science

This week in Science, we have concluded the large unit on Arthropods.  Scholars enjoyed working in groups to create a poster with the insects they found during their project.  As a reminder, Science test corrections are due on Tuesday, March 2nd.

Next week, we will begin our new unit on Force and Motion.
