Scholars have been introduced to the dynamic character, Anne.  Every chapter seems to reveal her limitless imagination!  Please make sure your scholar is reading nightly.  This weekend they will read Chapters 4 and 5.

Next week, scholars will complete Chapters 6-10.  As a reminder, scholars will have daily reading checks over their reading that is assigned as homework.

In math, we started fractions. We started with basic fractions properties. Then, we learned about equivalent fractions. We learned how to change mixed numbers into an improper fraction and vice versa. We also learned how to compare fractions.

Next week, we will be changing the fractions into decimals. We will also learn how to change repeating and nonrepeating decimals to fractions.

This week in History we completed our Greece unit with Alexander the Great. Students learned about his extensive empire and the spread of Greek culture.

Next week we will begin our exploration of Rome; we will discuss Rome’s origin and the development of its Republic. We will also discuss the impact of Julius Caesar on the expansion of the Roman Empire.

Science

This week in Science scholars enjoyed learning about our last subgroup in the Plant Kingdom – angiosperms.  Scholars enjoyed creating two Nature journal entries that had them observe a leaf and a flower.

We will conclude our unit on angiosperms next week and scholars will have a Unit test on Wednesday.  Please review their test with them and encourage them to correct all of their mistakes when the test is returned.

What's coming up after Fall Break?

Literature/Poetry

We have concluded our first novel and enjoyed reflecting on different virtuous actions of certain characters.  They completed their first reflection by stating a thesis and then finding quotes from the text to defend their claim of whether their character demonstrated virtue or not.  We concluded the week by reading a short story titled, “The Monkey’s Paw” by WW Jacobs. The scholars enjoyed the mystery and clearly understand the definition of “mood” when it relates to literature! Please send our next novel, Anne of Green Gables, with your scholar after Fall Break.  It is essential for your scholar to complete all reading assignments and annotation.  We have daily reading checks and discussions during Literature.

Math

In Math, we learned how to get a prime factorization of any composite number using a factor tree/inverted division. We used it to find the GCF (greatest common factor) and LCM (least common multiple). We concluded the unit (Number Theory) with a quiz.

We will start fractions the week we come back after the fall break. We will learn a lot of things about fractions: how to find equivalent fractions, how to compare fractions, etc.

History

This week in History we had a wonderful time discussing the relevance of Socrates and the other famous Greek Philosophers.

When we return from break, we will be wrapping up our Ancient Greece Unit with Alexander the Great and impact of the spread of Greek culture throughout is empire. We will be taking our exam October 30th.

Science

This week in Science, scholars have enjoyed learning about gymnosperms.  They were able to observe pinecones, count tree rings during their Tree Cookie lab, and concluded the week with a fun game explaining the importance of spacing between trees.

Scholars will study angiosperms when they return from Fall break. Please continue to encourage your scholar to practice their observation skills especially as the weather becomes more “comfortable”!
