6th Grade- Week of 5/24-5/28

 

Hello 6th Grade Families!

Semester 2 Early Release Days (1:45 PM):

Important dates:

5/28-- Last day of school!

As we begin the last week of school, we are asking all scholars to check their home, locker, and backpacks for borrowed Wind in the Willows class books, History textbooks, Biology books, and Math books.  We will be checking in books beginning next week and will let you know if your child is missing a book. Thank you for your support.

Scholars of the month

Every month, Great Hearts Western Hills chooses a virtue to focus on. The virtue of the month for April was Wisdom. One scholar in each class is highlighted for showing that virtue. For April, the scholars who we would like to highlight are Reece Nicholson from 6A and Nathan Martinez from 6B.

Important Information   

  • Please ensure that scholars bring his/her own water bottle to school. We will no longer provide water cups during the day.
  • Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
  • Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
  • Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of  The Wind in the Willows (ISBN- 978-0-14-303909-9) B&M scholars bring their books on Monday April 12This is very important as we are asking students to annotate in their own texts.
  • Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
  • Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
  • Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy. 

What's coming up?

Literature

Scholars have completed the Wind in the Willows and we enjoyed a class discussion on the importance of setting to the conflicts of the story and the character development.  It was a pleasure to hear the interactions between scholars on Toad’s character development. 

Next week, scholars will read William Shakespeare’s "A Midsummer Nights Dream".

Math

Students learned probability this week. They learned how to find probability, odds, and combined probabilities.

They have a test on probability next week on Monday. Then, we will learn how to find the circumference and area of a circle. We will end the year by playing chess."

History

This week we start our unit about Reform in America, students learned about the progressive individuals that influenced social, political, and economic reforms.

Next week we finish up the unit with introduction to the Progressive Presidents, Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson. 

Science

This week we concluded our unit on birds.  The scholars had an opportunity to dissect an owl pellet to further understand the delicate digestive system of a bird.  All students have the opportunity to complete test corrections on their Science test that was returned today.  Test corrections and an “extra credit” Nature Journal entry are due on Tuesday, May 25th.

What's coming up?

Literature

We have concluded Chapter 10 in the Wind in the Willows this week.  Scholars enjoyed making a “Wanted” poster for Toad and continuing to work on writing a summary.  

Next week we will complete our final novel of 6th grade.  Scholars will conclude the novel by writing an essay on the key lessons learned and a test over the entire novel on Friday, May 21st.  As a reminder, scholars will also be reciting Sonnet 143 on Monday, May 17th.  

Math

Students took math and reading STAAR test this week. On Thursday, we started probability. 

Next week, we will learn how to find the odds of an event. Then, we will learn how to find combined probabilities. Then we will do a review for the probability test.

History

This week in history we wrapped up Industrialization and Urbanization in  America Unit. Scholars gained a new perspective on what it means to receive an education after discovering the conditions of child labor. 

Next week, we will begin our last unit, Reform in America. Scholars will be introduced to the Progressive Era and the many significant individuals that helped create better working and living conditions, and the movement for social justice.

Science

Scholars enjoyed building their own 3D bird models and then presenting them in front of their peers.  The creativity while still being accurate with their characteristics was a joy to see.  

We will conclude our unit on Birds next week with a test on Wednesday, May 19th.

What's coming up?

Literature

Now that Toad has escaped prison, we are on a new adventure with him as he attempts to find his way home to Toad Hall.  Meanwhile, Rat is struggling with “restlessness” as he questions his life on the river.  Scholars have enjoyed creating comic strips, character analysis, and summaries as we have completed Chapter 9 of The Wind in the Willows.  

Next week, we will read and analyze Chapter 10.

Math

This week, we practiced problems from STAAR 2017. 

Next week, students will take the STAAR test, and we will start 'Probability'.

History

This week in History we explored the effects of child labor during the Industrialization Era and the beginnings of the Labor Movements and its work towards better working conditions and wages.

Next week we wrap up the unit with a discussion about the urbanization of the U.S. and the impact of political machines. We will have out Unit exam on Friday.

Science

As a reminder, all tests for Science have been returned and are expected to have a parent signature.  Scholars have enjoyed learning about adaptations birds have made to ensure their survival on all 7 continents!  

Next week, they will have the opportunity to use their knowledge to create their own model of a bird.

What's coming up?

Literature

Scholars are continuing to read our last novel, The Wind in the Willows. We have completed Chapter 7.  Please remind your scholar this would be a great time to go back and review their annotations and summaries over the past 7 chapters.  Ask them about the different relationships that are occurring in the novel and what theme they predict the author is trying to convey to the reader.  

Next week, scholars will continue to read Chapters 8-10.  Please remind your child of the importance of completing their nightly homework.

Math

This week, we reviewed problems from 2019 STAAR test. 

Next week, we will review problems from 2017 STAAR test

History

This week in History the scholars were introduced to significant innovators and the innovations that had a profound impact on society. Scholars also explored the achievements of  important industrialists Carnegie, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan and how their achievements helped the U.S. become an industrial giant beginning in the late 1800s.

Next week scholars will be analyzing political cartoons to decide if these industrialists are “Captains of Industry” or “Robber Barons”. We also will be discussing the effects of industrialization and urbanization during the turn of the century as well as the development and impact of the labor movement.. 

Science

Scholars have completed their unit on reptiles and will receive their test on Monday.  Please encourage your child to take advantage of the opportunity to do test corrections.  As a reminder, all tests require a parent signature.  

Next week, we will be starting our last unit of the year on birds.

What's coming up?

Literature

 This week in Literature, scholars have enjoyed embarking on the exciting adventure of Mole, Toad, and Rat.  This week we have covered Chapters 1 and 2.  

Next week, scholars will be reading Chapters 3 and 4.  Please remind your child to annotate and create summaries for each chapter.

Math

This week we reviewed proportions and percent. We ended the week with a test. 

Next week, we will learn how to plot coordinates. We will also review how to find mean, median, IQR, and range. We will learn how to interpret graphs to answer necessary questions.

History

This week in History we finished up our Immigration Unit, students should be working on creating their Immigrant Memoirs this weekend. 

Next week we will begin our focus on industrialization in the Unites States. Scholars will discover how the railroad connected the country and sparked an economic boom. 

Science

This week in Science, scholars have concluded their first few classes from the Phylum Chordata.  They also took their first Science test of the 4th quarter on Thursday.  All tests have been returned and can submit test corrections until Wednesday 4/21. 

 We will be exploring reptiles for the next 2 weeks.

What's coming up?

Literature

  This week scholars concluded the western novel, Shane. It was memorable to read together as a class as we discovered the depth of the bond between Shane and the Starrett family.  It was also entertaining to read the detailed gunfight between Shane, Fletcher, and Wilson.  As a reminder, scholars need to have all tests signed.  Please ask your child to see our final novel test that they should be receiving from their homeroom teacher within the next few days.  Scholars also received their next poem, "The New Colossus".  Scholars will be expected to recite this historical poem found on the Statue of Liberty on April 26th.  Please make sure your scholar is prepared to begin our last novel of the year, The Wind in the Willows, on Monday.  It is important for scholars to have their own copy as they will be responsible for making annotations that will deepen their understanding of the text.

Math

This week in Math we reviewed order of operations and number properties on Monday. We reviewed areas and volumes on Tuesday. We also reviewed the properties of triangles on Wednesday. Then, we talked about integers, opposites, and absolute values on Thursday. On Friday, we learned to change fractions to decimals and percents and put them in order.

Next week, we will review proportions, percents, and converting one unit to other using proportions.

History

This week in History we finished up our unit over the 1st Industrial Revolution and started our exploration of American Immigration in late 1800s. The scholars have identified the different factors that led to an increase in immigration and  the areas of the United States they settled.

 Next week  we will be discussing the benefits and challenges immigrants faced once arriving in the United States. Scholars will be creating their own immigrant memoirs next week as well

Science

Scholars have spent the past week exploring the characteristics of the Phylum Chordata and spent a day observing familiar fish.  

Next week, scholars will learn about amphibians and take their first test of the 4th quarter on Thursday 4/15.  Scholars will receive a Study Guide that will help them create flashcards to study.

What's coming up?

Literature

In Literature this week scholars have concluded Chapter 9 and analyzed the dynamic turn of Shane within the town.  Please encourage your child to complete Chapter 10 this weekend and annotate.  

Math

This week, we continued working on Integers. We added and subtracted them using a number line. Then we added and subtracted them without using a number line.

Next week, we will go back to equations and start practicing past STAAR test problems.

History

This week in History we began our Industrial Revolution Unit. Scholars identified why it began in Britain and what events led to this dramatic advancement in society. We also discussed the many inventions that influence the growth of the textile industry. 

Next week we will examine the working conditions and effects of the Industrial revolution.

Science

In Science this week scholars concluded there short study of the Earth structure.  It was wonderful seeing their creativity in their 3D models of the Earth.  

Next week, we will discuss the Solar System.
