Scholars of the month
Important Information
- Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
- Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
- Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of Tom Sawyer (ISBN 978-0-141-32110-3). B&M scholars bring their books on Monday January 4th.
- Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
- Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
- Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy.
Please view this video to learn how you can check if your child’s work has been uploaded properly, and please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions or concerns. We are here to support you!
What's coming up?
Literature
We have started a new poem that scholars will be responsible
for reciting during the week of December 14-17, "The Arrow and the Song".
We are also just about to complete Anne of Green Gables. We will begin
our next novel when we return from the Winter break on January 4th –
Tom Sawyer.
MathWe started the week with a test on Fractions. Then, we started operations with fractions. We learned how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions and mixed numbers.
Next week, we will start ratios and proportions. We will also do some problem-solving using proportions. Hopefully, we will have time to start scale drawing.

This week in History we wrapped our Ancient Rome unit with exploring the many factors that led to the decline of this once great empire.
Next week, we will begin our journey into the Age of Reason, also known as the Enlightenment. Our initial focus will be discussing the eras that fall between the Fall of Rome and the Enlightenment, such as the Middles Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration, the Reformation, and the Scientific Revolution. The students will examine how these eras in history influenced the Enlightenment. I am thrilled to begin this new unit; we will be discussing the works of great thinkers and writers like Newton, Descartes, Hobbes, Locke, Voltaire and Wollstonecraft and how they influenced modern society.
Science
We have completed the first unit of Animal Kingdom with our test covering Sponges and Jellyfish. We will now be moving into snails, slugs, clams, and octopus to name a few!
We are looking forward to a fun earthworm dissection at the end of next week. As a reminder, all Science tests require a parent signature!
