6th Grade - 8/24-8/28

A Note from Your 6th Grade Teachers...

Hello, Families! We hope that the second week of distance learning has brought you encouragement as scholars and parents begin settling into a daily routine and ironing out the wrinkles of the new school year. It has been a pleasure getting to know your children in our Zoom meetings. Thank you for your hard work these past two weeks and trusting us with your child's education. We are privileged to work with you this year and are here to support you.

Warmly,

Mrs. Glowe, Ms. Laboy, Mr. Bhandari, and Mrs. Alcorta

Important Information

  • Parents, please see the Stream of your scholar's Google Classroom daily for an updated agenda for the day. This will help guide your scholar while doing their work to ensure assignments are being done and turned in. It will also help you when you are checking your scholar's work to make sure that nothing was forgotten about or missed.

  • We are working very hard to provide your scholar with feedback to all of the work being turned in. In order to see how your student is doing on assignments turned in follow the steps provided below:
    • In Google Classroom on the web, available classes display after you sign in. Click on or tap a class, then Classwork (from the top menu), then View My Work. When you see a small speech bubble next to an assignment that means a teacher has left a comment for your scholar.
    • In the Google Classroom app on iOS or Android, tap a class, tap Classwork, then tap the student work icon in the upper-right hand corner of the screen.
    • Each assignment is listed with its status (e.g., Assigned, Turned In, or Missing) and due date, if added. If available, grades also display on this screen, although not all assignments will have a score associated with it.
  • 6B Parents, if you are interested in becoming a Room Parent, please email Mrs. Alcorta at jessica.alcorta@greatheartswesternhils.org.
  • Every Friday, we will have a Homeroom Zoom at 8am to check in on scholars.  This will be the only Zoom on Fridays during Remote Learning.  Please find the Zoom link in the Google Classroom labeled Friday Homeroom Zoom.

This Week at a Glance

Literature and Poetry

This week in Literature we explored Science Fiction and analyzed foreshadowing in Ray Bradbury’s, The Sound of Thunder. We also became acquainted with our first poem , My Hearts Leaps Up  by William Wordsworth and his use of figurative language. Next week we will continue to enjoy the beauty in poetry and dive into our first novel, Tales of the Greek Heroes.

Writing

Scholars will learn how and why to write summaries and construct outlines, practicing each in their Writing Notebook.

Grammar

Scholars will review the elements of a sentence and identify the four sentence types. They will then break sentences into their parts (analyze) and begin diagramming.

Math

In Math this past week, we learned the distributive property. Then, we did the order of operations. Next week, we will start by solving some word problems, and we will translate some word phrases into mathematical expressions. Then, we will start using all the properties we have learned in Unit 1 to simplify our variable expressions.

History

This week in History, we focused on the ways in which we interact with environment in order to survive and the differences between adaption and modification. Students also identified important map skills, learning about different types of maps and how we use them. Next week we will continue to refine map skills with a continued focus on relative and absolute location in preparation for Thursday’s Test.

Science

In Science this week we started our Nature Journals as we practiced being naturalist and understanding that all living organisms can be classified using the Linnaean Taxonomy Classification model.  Next week scholars will learn more about cells and will conclude the week by creating their own cell analogy and model project they will share with their classmates on zoom!
