Please note
Important Information
- Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
- Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
- Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of Tom Sawyer (ISBN 978-0-141-32110-3). B&M scholars bring their books on Monday January 4th.
- Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
- Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
- Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy.

What's coming up?
Literature
In preparation for the 6th grade Independent Study Project, scholars have been reading and analyzing Dr. Martin Luther King Jr’s, “I Have A Dream” speech.
Next week, 6th grade will compare and contrast Dr. King’s speech with the poem, “I Dream a World,” by Langston Hughes.
MathThis week, we learned how to change decimal to percent, and percent to decimal. We learned how to evaluate the percent amount when percent is given, and percent when the amount is given. We also did some word problems on discount and markup.
Next week, we will continue with percent, and do word problems involving commission, simple interest, and compound interest. We will end the week with a test.
History

This is week in History we wrapped up our unit over the Enlightenment.
Next week we are exploring the causes of the French Revolution.
Science
This week we focused on fossil fuels and renewable fuels. Ask your scholar about the disadvantages and advantages of both. This weekend they will complete their “Conservation” brochure that will be due on Monday. Scholars will share different ideas on how to conserve energy around their home and here at school.
Next week, scholars will learn about density and prepare for their final test of the quarter in Science on Thursday, Jan. 14th.
