6th Grade - Week of 1/18- 1/22

Welcome, 6th Grade Families!

We hope you have a great three day weekend!

 Announcements

Parent teacher conferences will be held on January 19th and 20th between 8:30 and 4:30. Each conference will be 15 minutes with all four 6th grade teachers. Please sign up at: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d44aaa922a7f5c52-sixth

Independent study week is the week of 1/18. The 6th grade scholars will memorize Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech "I Have a Dream", and will recite it on Friday 1/22. All Brick and Mortar students should have received a hard copy of the speech and the rubric. This is the first grade of the 3rd quarter, and your scholar must be here to recite on Friday 1/22. This cannot be made up.

We had a few trays left over from the Literature celebration. Please let us know if they are yours!

Please note

Our uniform policy states that for boys "No jewelry except a watch may be worn (no smart watches), as long as it does not become a distraction," and for girls "Simple stud- styled earrings may be worn (no dangling or hoop earrings). If a student wears a necklace, it must be tucked into the shirt and not visible. No other jewelry except a watch (no smart watches) may be worn. No other piercings, body art, jewelry or temporary tattoos should be worn to school."
Noncompliance with the policy will result in an infraction.

For outerwear, the handbook states: “only GH uniform sweaters and pullovers can be worn in the school building) Vendor: Dennis Uniforms Only or Flynn O’Hara Uniforms.

  • Non-uniform outwear is not allowed inside the school building. (Navy pullover sweaters with white striped border are not allowed at GHWH for current grade levels.)
  • Jackets and sweatshirts may be worn to school for warmth but must be free of logos and messages, with the following exceptions: small sports team logos (e.g., Spartans, Diamondbacks) and small brand name logos (e.g. the Ralph Lauren “polo”) are acceptable, provided they are tasteful and do not make inappropriate allusions.
  • All jackets and sweatshirts must be solid colored and may have no patterns or distracting/over-sized logos of any kind. Jackets and sweatshirts must remain in the lockers, cubbies or desks for the remainder of the school day.
  • Great Hearts Western Hills uniform sweaters may be worn throughout the school day all year long. The only outerwear allowable to be worn in the school building are the official school sweater or pullover with the Great Hearts logo available from Dennis Uniforms or Flynn O’Hara Uniforms.”

Student planners

To help parents and teachers stay on the same we want to utilize your scholar’s planner. Every morning, we will have the evening’s homework assignments posted on the board. Your scholar is expected to write the homework down into their planner. At the end of the day, one teacher will sign your scholar’s planner to insure they have written everything down. As they accomplish homework, either at school or at home, they should put a check mark next to the assignment indicating that it was completed. Please check your scholar’s planner to ensure they are completing their homework every night. If they do not complete their homework, they will stay in from recess to complete it.

Please make sure your scholar has all the proper supplies for the start of the new semester! This includes having red pens and colored pencils!

Important Dates

1/19, 1/20 Parent teacher conferences

1/22 Independent study week project presentation

Scholars of the month

Every month, Great Hearts Western Hills chooses a virtue to focus on. The virtue of the month for December was Friendship. One scholar in each class is highlighted for showing that virtue. For November, the scholars who we would like to highlight are Christian Zamot from 6A and Jayden Garcia from 6B.

Important Information

  • Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
  • Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
  • Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of  Tom Sawyer (ISBN 978-0-141-32110-3). B&M scholars bring their books on Monday January 25th.
  • Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
  • Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
  • Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy.
