Scholars of the month

Every month, Great Hearts Western Hills chooses a virtue to focus on. The virtue of the month for January was Courage. One scholar in each class is highlighted for showing that virtue. For November, the scholars who we would like to highlight are David Garcia from 6A and Melody Martinez from 6B.

Important Information

  • Students who do not complete their homework will have to complete their homework during recess on the day the homework is due.
  • Scholars can receive a recess detention as a consequence for continual actions that distract from the learning environment during school. This is an opportunity for scholars to spend time reflecting on how to make good choices that will help them be successful here at Great Hearts. Parents will be notified before the detention is served.
  • Please make sure your scholar has his or her own copy of  Tom Sawyer (ISBN 978-0-141-32110-3). B&M scholars bring their books on Monday January 4th.
  • Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and to make for quicker visits.
  • Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) ASAP. These are required.
  • Uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy.
  •  Please view this video to learn how you can check if your child’s work has been uploaded properly, and please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions or concerns. We are here to support you!

What's coming up?

Literature

We are well into our next novel, Tom Sawyer.  Please make sure your child is completing their evening reading assignments and annotating.  Please make sure scholars read Chapters 8 and 9 this weekend.  They have been given a question for each chapter to help them think further about their reading.

Next week, we will read Chapters 10-16.  As a reminder, we are reading the Puffin Classics version of Tom Sawyer.

Math

We started the week with a review of percent. We spent two days reviewing. There was a test on Wednesday. Then, we started Geometry. We started with triangles, then moved to the areas of rectangles and parallelograms.

Next week, we will evaluate the areas of triangles and trapezoids. Then, we will name and classify polyhedrons. We will also calculate the volume of prisms.

History

This week in History the scholars continued to learn about the causes and important people and events of the French Revolution. Although I have been out; I have heard that they did a great job working together on their timelines.

I am so happy to be feeling better and returning to campus next week; I have truly missed my students. Next week, we will be exploring more about the French Revolution; in particular, the Reign of Terror. We will also meet Napoleon Bonaparte and examine his impact on France.

Science

Scholars enjoyed exploring the bottom of the ocean this floor as they discovered unique characteristics of the phylum echinoderms.  Make sure you ask your child what unique animals are in this phylum.

Next week, we will begin to study crayfish, scorpions, and spiders.
