6th Grade - Week of 9/28 - 10/2

Important Information

  • Please have your scholar bring a locker shelf to help with organization of materials and make for quicker visits.
  • Please place a cover on all textbooks (Math and Biology) by Monday, September 28th. 
  • Beginning Monday, September 28th, uniform infractions will be issued for scholars in violation of the GH uniform policy. 
  • As a reminder,  agenda, quizzes, and assignments in Google Classroom will be available to your scholar at 7:00 am each day. 

  • Distance Learning Families- If you take photos of assignments to upload in Google Classroom, please make sure that words are clear and legible before submitting your work. 

  •  Please view this video to learn how you can check if your child’s work has been uploaded properly, and please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) with any questions or concerns. We are here to support you!

What's coming up next week?

Literature/Poetry

This week scholars returned to the adventures of The tales of the Greek Heroes.  Please remind your child to be reading and making careful annotations that will contribute to our class discussions.  Ask your scholar to share summaries of Chapters 16 and 17 next week.  

Grammar/Writing

This week we learned how to identify and diagram predicate verbs and Direct objects. Next week , we will learn about Predicate Nominatives.

This week we  began our lesson about Historical Narratives; we will continue to work through the writing process next week, which will lead to the development of a three paragraph summary.

Math

We delved into decimals this week. We learned how to write decimal numbers in words. We learned how to write them in expanded notation. We even learned how we can compare decimals. We will keep doing decimals next week. We will learn what happens when we multiply decimals by exponents of 10. We will learn how to add, subtract, and multiply decimals as well.

History

This week we completed our exploration into Judaism and Christianity. Next week will start our unit over Ancient Greece, focusing  on the impact of geography historical, the origins of Democracy, the rivalry between Athens and Sparta, and the impact of the Persian Wars.

Science

This week scholars created different hypothesis and learned more about the Scientific Method.  Next week, we will be studying the plant kingdom and will conclude the week with a Nature Journal entry on leaves.  All scholars need to have their Science book covered by Monday.  You can send a book cover with them or a paper bag that they can use to cover their book during study hall.

6th Grade - Week of 9/21- 9/25

  • There will be no synchronous zoom meetings on Monday, 9/21.
  • As a reminder,  agenda, quizzes, and assignments in Google Classroom will be available to your scholar at 7:00 am each day. 

  • If you take photos of assignments to upload to Google Classroom, please make sure that words are clear and legible before submitting your work.

What's coming up next week?

Literature/Poetry

Scholars enjoyed learning about the Prince who got caught up in a war: Lugalbanda.  It was a wonderful story filled with dynamic characters and virtue.  Next week, scholars will begin their new poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost.  They will also return to Chapter 14 and 15 in the Tales of the Greek Heroes novel. 

Grammar/Writing

Scholars worked on diagramming sentences with both adverbs and adjectives this week.  Next week, scholars will learn about certain parts of speech that act as grammatical bridges within a sentence.  Scholars continued to practice writing 2 level outlines this week in writing.  Next week, scholars will focus on making chronological narrations of past events.

Math

We finished equations and inequalities this week and started exponents and decimals. We did problems on order of operations involving exponents. We will continue doing decimals next week. We will learn place values. We will also learn how to compare decimal numbers. 

History

This week, we continued our exploration of Mesopotamia and how Geography was so important to its development. We also discovered the origins of Judaism and the Geography of Ancient Israel.
Next week we will identify the cultural characteristics of Judaism, the origins and impact of Christianity. Students will have a History test Thursday, September 24th

Science

Thank you to the scholars who shared their mushroom lab with their classmates this week!  We have completed Kingdom Fungi and next week we will begin learning about Kingdom Plantae.

What's coming up next week?

Literature and Poetry

Scholars concluded Chapter 13 of the Tales of the Greek Heroes this week.  Encourage them to share with you the 12 labours of Heracles and which one impressed them the most!  Next week, we will take a break from our novel to enjoy the short story, Lugalbanda. This is one of the oldest stories dating back to the ancient Mesopotamia Valley.  This short story will be in the Google classroom as a read aloud or as a pdf.  It tells the story of how a young prince got caught up in a war. 

Writing

This week scholars learned how to construct an outline using a historical sequence.Next week, we will continue practicing using the correct form in documentation, such as in-text citations and Works Cited Page.

Grammar

This week, we learned about adverbs and how they are used in a sentence. Next week, we will analyze and practice diagramming sentences with adjectives.

Math

We started diving in the ocean of equations and inequalities this week. We have not gotten out of it yet. We are still swimming. Next week, however, we will finally move away from equations and inequalities after Tuesday. We will, then, enter the world of Decimals and Exponents.

History

This week in World History, we finished up the World Deserts unit and students completed their second test. Today, we  began exploring the characteristics of civilization, specifically within Mesopotamia. Next week, we will discuss how geography impacted the development of civilization Mesopotamia. We will also compare and contrast two major world religions, Judaism and Christianity.

Science

Scholars were introduced to the Kingdom Fungi and how penicillin was discovered by Andrew Fleming.  Next week, scholars will do a mushroom lab on Tuesday and will have their Unit 2 test on Friday.  Scholars are encouraged to have their own mushroom to follow along with the video on Tuesday.

What's coming up next week?

Literature and Poetry

This week in Literature scholars enjoyed reading Chapters 7-10 in The Tales of the Greek Heroes.

They were introduced to Perseus and Heracles.  Next week, scholars will continue reading Chapters 11-13 and review the importance of the 12 Labours that were performed by Heracles. 

Writing

We started the week with the translation of sentences into inequalities. Then, we started solving some equations as well as some inequalities. Next week, we will solve more equations and inequalities. Then, we will solve word problems using equations and inequalities.

History

This week in World History the students completed a map projection experiment, were introduced to the Core Knowledge textbook, and began exploration of our World Deserts. Next week we will continue to identify desert characteristics and finally  begin our  journey in the history of  human civilization.  Please check communications about scholar’s opportunity to turn in missing assignments or retake assessments.

Science

This week in Science scholars were introduced to Kingdom Protista or what I refer to as the “junk drawer” of organisms.  Be sure to ask your scholar what that means and I hope they were able to discover how common algae is in our everyday life.  Next week, scholars will move to Kingdom Fungi and how it led to the discovery of Penicillin. -Mrs. Glowe
